Closing the loop on Cosmetic Waste

KEY PARTNERS

With support from the Australian Government, we are partnering with Myer to inform the feasibility of a national product stewardship scheme for cosmetics. We are running a cosmetics collection trial for an eight-week period from 22 July – 16 September. During this period consumers can bring any brand of used cosmetic makeup items to collection points in the twelve participating Myer stores. With guidance from peak industry body, Accord, the trial aims to test different processing methods and research new ways of recycling to achieve higher value end products. Further details and participating locations can be found below.

What happens next?

Once collected, products will be sorted into eight categories (based on material type) and either recycled or remanufactured into other products. Hard and soft plastics will be shredded and used in TonerPlas, an asphalt additive which uses waste plastics and toner from old printer cartridges to create roads that last longer and require less maintenance than traditional asphalt. Hard plastics will also be used in our Resin8 concrete additive. Metals will be separated and sent to a metals recycling facility, and glass will be crushed for use as a sand replacement in building materials for the construction industry.
