TonerPlas™ is Close the Loop’s latest development of our asphalt additives and is ground-breaking in that we have created a product that enhances the characteristics of asphalt, so producing higher quality road surfaces, that last 65% longer than traditional asphalt while contributing a major solution to a problematic waste issue of soft plastics.
In Australia alone, more than 300,000 tonnes of soft plastic are dumped into landfills every year. Not only is this bad for the environment it is a monumental waste of a valuable resource that can be re-used and re-purposed into new products. Our contribution to solving the soft plastics problem is TonerPlas™. This is a formulated product using waste toner collected from printer cartridges via programs like Cartridges 4 Planet Ark, and soft plastics collected from the community by our partner Red Group via the RedCycle program.
The formulated product is then injected into the asphalt mix with our partner Downer Group who adds recycled glass and recycled asphalt pavement to create lower carbon, higher quality roads that last 65% longer than traditional asphalt. Every kilometre of road will contain the equivalent of 530,000 plastic shopping bags, 168,000 glass bottles, and waste toner from 12,500 printer cartridges.
Now that is something to celebrate!!

TonerPave™ is a new asphalt, with high recycled content and reduced carbon footprint. TonerPave™ was developed by Close the Loop in partnership with one of Australia’s largest infrastructure companies, Downer Group, and is the result of a shared culture of innovation and a genuine desire to reduce the companies’ carbon footprint. Too often recycled products are viewed as being inferior, but TonerPave™ produces a superior asphalt that resists rutting and cracking at both higher and lower temperatures, and requires less maintenance, as well as having a 23% lower carbon footprint, all at the same price as standard asphalt.
Downer is one of Australia’s largest, most progressive infrastructure companies, a top tier producer of asphalt and builder of roads. TonerPave™ is part of a new range of asphalt products supplied by Downer under its ‘Low Carbon Asphalt’ banner.
The key ingredient of TonerPave™ is MTP (Modified Toner Polymer), which has been developed over many years by Close the Loop and is a prime example of industrial ecology in action.
CtL and Downer have formed an exclusive partnership to bring TonerPave™ to market. More than 1,000km of TonerPave™ asphalt has been laid in Australian municipal council jurisdictions in most States of Australia and is now a mainstream product with a significant following. Close the Loop continues to innovate in re-use and re-purposing of recovered post-consumer material into new products and is currently releasing a new product called TonerSeal for use in sprayseal road manufacture, again in partnership with Downer.

Enviroliner™ Recycled Felt Tip Pen
Close the Loop (CtL) collects and recycles millions of inkjet cartridges every year through programs like ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’.
As the name suggests, Close the Loop is about closing product and material loops, aimed at recovering resources that would otherwise go to landfill.
Further to just collecting and recycling cartridges CtL, needed to think and reflect on the environmental objectives of our customers. Therefore through years of materials recovery and innovative technologies we created the Enviroliner – Recycled felt tip pen.
Enviroliner™ is perhaps the most advanced felt tip pen on the market today in terms of environmental innovation. Your Enviroliner™ felt tip pen is the first in the world to ever use post–consumer recycled (PCR) ink from end of life inkjet cartridges. The actual ingredients that make up the remaining 20% of the ink in this pen are a trade secret, but they are non-toxic additives to blend and refine the black, yellow, cyan, and magenta dyes from high quality inkjet cartridges. The additives also help raise the surface tension, so the ink works perfectly in pens.
The plastic housings of all Enviroliner™ pens are also made from PCR plastic sourced from waste inkjet cartridges. The engineering grade polypropylene (PP) has been sourced from Close the Loop’s inkjet cartridge recycling lines in Australia and the USA. They contain no additives which means that 100% of the plastic housing (including the cap) is recycled material.
All this innovation, combined with a committed team of people, has enabled the production of perhaps the world’s most environmentally conscious felt tip pens ever.
- Use of 80% recycled ink
- Plastic pen body is 100% PCR PP (Post-Consumer Recycled Polypropylene)
- Available only in black ink
- For use in “green” team initiatives, staff have a tangible item as a result of their recycling
- Pens can be customised with your company logo
- Pens can be used as corporate gifts
- Your Enviroliner™ pen can be recycled over and over again just by placing your used pen back in your printer cartridge recycling box
- Purchasing recycled pens is a great Corporate Social Responsibility initiative
