National Recycling Week 2024: How Schools Can Drive Change in the E-Waste Crisis

With National Recycling Week approaching, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the growing e-waste crisis. According to the UN’s Global E-Waste Monitor 2024, the world generated 62 billion kilograms of e-waste in 2022—roughly 7.8 kilograms per person. This amount would need 1.55 million trucks to carry it all, enough to circle Earth’s equator! And it’s only growing: by 2030, global e-waste is projected to reach a staggering 82 billion kilograms. To tackle this issue, we must raise awareness about recycling and encourage everyone to explore alternatives before buying new products—like opting for second-hand items when possible.

Individuals, organisations, all have a role to play in making a difference. Schools, in particular, can have a profound impact by helping the next generation understand the seriousness of this issue and take action. By educating students and fostering responsible habits, schools can help lead the way toward a more sustainable future.

The Power of Education: Sparking Change in the Classroom

Recognising the vital role education plays in tackling the e-waste crisis, our partners Cool.org and Comsol developed Closing The E-Loop to provide valuable resources specifically for schools and students. Together, they’ve created in-depth lessons aligned with the Australian school curriculum, complemented by the Sustainable Electronics Solutions video showcase. This series of 36 expert interviews with industry leaders illustrates the entire electronic product supply chain, offering valuable insights into addressing e-waste at every stage. These open-source resources are valuable to high schoolers, university students and adults alike, empowering change at work, home and school.

Real Action: Hands-On Sustainability with Close the Loop

Free Cartridge Collection Program for schools

Beyond education, it’s important to offer students real, hands-on opportunities to make a difference. That’s why Close the Loop is proud to offer the Cartridge Collection Program.

Here’s how it works: Schools can easily register, and we’ll provide everything needed to start collecting used printer cartridges. When your collection box is full, we’ll pick it up and ensure that all cartridges are recycled responsibly.

It’s a simple yet impactful way for your school to reduce e-waste while engaging students in a tangible sustainability initiative.

E-Waste Pop-Up Days

2024 marks a significant milestone for Close the Loop, as we’ve partnered with Officeworks and Brother International Australia to host e-waste recycling Pop-Up Days. These events collect a wide range of used household batteries, cartridges, and tech products, ensuring they are recycled responsibly rather than ending up in landfill. Schools and communities are encouraged to participate, making a real impact in the fight against e-waste.

We’re committed to bringing more e-waste recycling Pop-Up Days in the future. Stay updated by following us on social media and being part of this movement.
