Closing the Loop on Cosmetic Waste

With support from the Australian Government, we are working with Myer, MAC Cosmetics and industry peak body Accord to inform the feasibility of a national product stewardship scheme for cosmetics. As part of this project we are running a cosmetics collection program from 22 July – 16 September. During this period consumers can bring any brand of used cosmetic makeup items to collection points in participating Myer stores. MAC will also be contributing all MAC-branded products collected through their long-standing “Back to MAC” program. Products collected will be used to test different processing methods and research new ways of recycling to achieve higher value end products. Further details and participating locations can be found below.

Where can I drop off my used cosmetics?

We are proud to be partnering with Myer and MAC Cosmetics to run these trials. You can drop off any brand of cosmetic items to the twelve participating Myer stores listed below. You can also drop-off MAC-branded products to any MAC store across Australia as part of their “Back to MAC program“.

What can I drop off?

Is your item listed below? Check the list to see whether the product is being accepted as part of the collection trials. You can also scan your product using the Recycle Mate app to find out if it’s accepted, and where your closest collection point is.   • Lip primer

  • Liquid and powder foundations
  • Compact / setting powder / loose powder
  • Highlighter
  • Bronzer
  • Face primer and concealers (liquid, cream, stick)
  • Nail polish/varnish and nail polish remover
  • Nail treatments / nail creams
  • Setting spray
  • Face moisturiser / day & night creams / BB cream
  • Toner
  • Hand cream
  • Body lotion
  • Self-tanning products
  • Makeup remover / cleanser
  • Perfume bottles

Not Accepted

The following items cannot be accepted:

  • Electronic items (e.g. blow dryers or straighteners)
  • Scissors or cutting implements
  • Shaving razors

Note: Check first if the items you have can go in your kerbside recycling bin. If not, then bring it to one of our collection points!
