Canon
LIVING AND WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON GOOD
Canon's aim is to make high-performance, functional products while minimising the use of precious resources and eliminating waste at every stage.
We have been successful in developing compact digital cameras that efficiently utilise as few resources as possible, printers and multifunction devices that consume dramatically less energy and programs for the collection and recycling of used toner cartridges. At each stage of the lifecycle of Canon products (production, use, and recycling) Canon assesses the amount of CO2 emitted and undertakes efforts to reduce it.
Canon pioneered the collection of used toner cartridges in 1990 as a voluntary measure, and started toner cartridge recycling the following year. To date, we have collected a total of 190,000 tonnes globally. All collected cartridges are utilised as reused parts in new products or in material recycling and we achieve 100% recovery. Through this toner cartridge recycling program, we have reduced the use of new resources by 110,000 tons and CO2 emissions by 310,000 tons.
Canon Australia is proud to be a founding partner of the Cartridges for Planet Ark Program. Our cartridges collected through the program are returned through Canon's global reuse and recycling program or recycled in Australia by Close the Loop. In November 2008, our environmental efforts were publicly recognised when the Association of Field Service Management International (AFSMI) announced Canon Australia as the winner of the inaugural Australian Green Service Award. We scored consistently well in all categories and were judged "best in class" by our industry peers.

HP
HP provides free recycling for HP print cartridges in 53 countries or territories covering more than 88 percent of global print cartridge sales including Australia. The cumulative volume of cartridges returned and recycled reached 390 million pounds (177,000 tonnes) in 2009. This equates to more than 61 million LaserJet and inkjet cartridges returned and recycled worldwide in 2009, bringing the total to date to 320 million.
We design HP print cartridges to be recyclable and incorporate recycled material. Since we take back only our own cartridges, we can be certain about the material content, making it easier to process exhausted cartridges and reuse the material to manufacture new ones. In 2009, HP reached cumulative shipments of 555 million inkjet cartridges using plastic recycled from used HP cartridges - the first such "closed loop" process in the industry.
